What You’ll Learn

By knitting the Rudbeckia Cowl, you’ll learn:

  • How to choose colours that will work together
  • Basic Fair Isle / stranded knitting techniques
  • How to manage multiple yarn colours in the round
  • How to maintain a consistent gauge for colourwork
  • How to finish a seamless cowl neatly
  • How to block a cowl for professional results

This pattern introduces colourwork in a beginner-friendly way while producing a timeless accessory.

For those new to colourwork there is a comprehensive section on choosing colours based on colour theory, yarn handling tips and techniques and managing tension.

CONSTRUCTION:
The Rudbeckia Cowl is worked in the round from the bottom up. A short section of ribbing is followed by the stranded colorwork section, which is offered with both charted and written instructions. The ribbing is then repeated at the top of the cowl.

SKILLS:
Basic knitting skills including cast on, bind off and knit are all that is required as there is no shaping involved. There are a few rounds that require three shades, which may require slightly more dexterity, but is very do-able for most knitters.

YARN:
DK weight yarn. Although not essential, wool based yarn will help your stitches to stay pop and its elasticity will help with even tension. The sample is knit in The Fibre Co. Lore (100% lambswool).
